Description

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning (ML), is fundamentally transforming polymer design and chemistry. Traditional empirical methods are increasingly inadequate for meeting the growing demand for advanced materials and navigating the vast chemical space of polymers. AI-driven approaches enable researchers to predict polymer properties, optimize synthesis processes, and design novel formulations with unprecedented efficiency, significantly reducing development time and costs. By leveraging large datasets and advanced computational models, AI can identify complex structure–property relationships that are often difficult to uncover through conventional experimental methods. This integration facilitates the customization of polymers for diverse applications, including biomedical devices, drug delivery systems, energy storage technologies, packaging materials, and high-performance composites, while also promoting sustainable manufacturing practices and resource efficiency. Furthermore, emerging technologies such as generative AI, deep learning, and autonomous experimentation platforms are accelerating the discovery of next-generation polymers with enhanced functionality and environmental compatibility. Despite these advancements, challenges such as data scarcity, limited standardization of polymer datasets, the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, and regulatory hurdles persist. Addressing these challenges will be crucial to fully harness AI’s potential in redefining the future of polymer science, enabling faster innovation, improved material performance, and more sustainable industrial applications across multiple sectors.
