Description
CBAM or Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is an instrument of European Union climate policy that, on the one hand, protects member states from goods that are produced in conditions where there are no emission limits, and on the other hand, intends to encourage economic partners outside the EU to have more climate sustainable production. The CBAM regulation entered into force in October 2023, through a so-called transition period, or adaptation period, which ends on 01.01.2026. All production companies that produce goods covered by CBAM border tax returns that fall into the following categories: hydrogen, steel, iron, aluminum, fertilizers, cement, and electricity, after this date will have to not only report the emissions contained in the products, but also purchase special CBAM emission certificates. It must be emphasized that not every product from the listed groups is subject to such tax returns. This can be checked based on the customs codes of the products. Financial risks costs of certificates and penalties starting in 2026, importers will be obliged to purchase CBAM certificates that reflect the CO2 emissions associated with the production of the imported product. The certificates will cost as much as the ETS allows or as much as 80-100 euros per ton.
