Description
The Republic of North Macedonia first introduced a separate regulation on packaging and packaging waste management in 2010, and in 2021 adopted a new law that is aligned with the new EU regulations on packaging and packaging waste management.
This Law regulates the requirements for the protection of the environment and human health that packaging must meet during production, placing on the market and handling of packaging waste, which includes the obligations of economic operators and other entities participating in the process of production and placing on the market of packaging, the requirements for collection, reuse, processing, recycling and disposal, as well as other conditions for handling packaging waste, reporting and economic instruments for achieving the objectives for collection, processing and recycling of packaging waste.
The main objectives of this paper is to present the state of play in the state regarding the efforts for reducing the negative impact of packaging and packaging waste on the environment and human health and improving environmental protection standards by economic operators throughout the life cycle of packaging, and in particular during the treatment, reuse, processing and disposal of packaging waste.
The paper also focus on prevention of the generation of packaging waste, reduction and limitation of the use of harmful metals and materials and other hazardous substances in packaging, separate collection of packaging waste at the place of its generation, high level of reuse, recycling and other types of processing of packaging waste, and encouraging the production of reusable packaging that is biodegradable.
