Geranium species (Geraniaceae), commonly known as cranesbills, are flowering annual to perennial plants that are common throughout temperate regions and used as popular folk remedies. In Serbia, G. macrorrhizum L., commonly known as “Zdravac”, is a widely used medicinal plant. The rhizome and aerial parts have been used since antiquity for medicinal purposes to treat diarrhea, and externally for wounds, excessive bleeding, and sores. Additionally, G. macrorrhizum is utilized for treating inflammatory diseases. Inflammation is a biological immune response that can be triggered by a number of factors such as pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds. The aim of this study was to determine the qualitative composition of G. macrorhizzum leaves hidrolate which is a by-product during hydrodistillation and their in vitro anti-inflammatory activity.
The hydrolate (the aqueous phase of the suspension) was separated after essential oil isolation from leaves of G. macrorhizzum grown in South Sebia. The chemical composition of hydrolate was determined by UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS analysis. The anti-inflammatory activity of hydrolate was estimated by using the Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) assay.
Twenty-one components were detected in the hydrolate, of which seventeen were identified, mainly phenolic acids and flavonoids. The hydrolate showed anti-inflammatory activity obtained by BSA assay of 59.43±0.036%. The anti-inflammatory activity is most likely a result of the presence of phenolic compounds in the hydrolate.
The obtained results are particularly significant, considering that the hydrolate is a by-product of hydrodistillation, and based on the obtained results, it represents a source of highly valuable bioactive components with anti-inflammatory activity.
